Krakow, Poland The Big Train/Bike Adventure 26/04/08 Day 283

This adventure to Krakow is turning out to be a real problem. I've been out on an overnight bike riding tour twice in the past two weeks and I'm a bit tired but I want to do this if I can figure out the rail situation. I don't want another Odysseus moment.

My Itinerary

July 18, 2008 Depart LAX where I will join my group from The Planetary Society to see “The Total Solar Eclipse” near the city of Jiayuguan, China. I will be traveling to many cities in China including Xi'an, Karamay then west to Urumqi. After several days off to Pakistan over the Tashkurgan Pass (4700). Then back across China to the Altai area to view the Total Solar Eclipse.
August 2, 2008 Depart Chongqing, China for Kathmandu, Nepal
This is going to be a very exciting part of the adventure. I will be spending one week in Kathmandu before my London group arrives. I will be able to really see the city my way. On August 9, 2008 we all depart for the base camp of Everest Tour 17 Days. I will be staying with local Nepalese people in their homes or “Tea Houses” that are along the route. Upon reaching Base camp we will spend one night and two days before returning to Kathmandu.
August 28, 2008 Depart Kathmandu for Athens, Greece
I will be staying in Athens for about a week to see the beautiful sites around the city. I then plan to travel on to Delphi and the Mt. Parnassus National Park. After a few nights I will head north to Thermopylae and other sites I feel like seeing. The goal is to get to the base of Mt Olympus which I plan to summit. My stay in Greece could last several weeks.
Mid September 2008 Depart overland north up the Adriatic Highway through Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia Herzegovina. I plan to move fast through this part unless I see something great. But my goal is to get to Croatia. This is an exciting place. The beaches and National Parks here will be quite an experience. I want to explore all of it. After I’ve exhausted myself it will be time to head north again. Next is Slovenia, Italy, Austria and then the Czech Rep. This is where I plan to rest and decompress.
Early October 2008 Arrive in Prague, Czech Rep.
Before leaving Los Angeles I will have shipped a large crate with new gear and my bicycle. This is where I will stay through the winter waiting for spring. As weather permits I will adventure out. I plan to take several 3 to 4 day tours in different directions by myself and with new friends I meet. I hope to stay until July 09. I can’t wait to ride and camp in the Czech Rep. and Austria in the spring.
Summer 2009 After spending a lot of time in the Czech Republic I will move onto Amsterdam then to Paris. This part of the plan is a little vague right now. Things will certainly change. Many contingency plans will be adopted or discarded. Who knows?
August 2009 Depart Paris for NYC where I plan to buy a vehicle to tour across the US and Canada before reaching California.
I have to make the complete trip around the world.
Well I missed Paris but flew out of Frankfurt, Germany instead. I made Amsterdam though. Arrived in Newark and headed North to the Northeast where I found some much needed help from friends. I'm on my way across the country now in a truck I bought. I want to be in California by mid December.
